From PlayStation 2 farming to pioneering holographic entertainment
In short: Asobo Studio's journey is a masterclass in technical evolution. They didn't just build games; they built the engines and technologies to power them, moving from early 2000s multiplayer titles to becoming the first independent developer in holographic entertainment.
Asobo Studio was founded in 2002 by twelve developers who left Kalisto Entertainment. Their first major milestone was the 2003 release of Super Farm for the PlayStation 2. While many studios rely on third-party software, Asobo's backbone is the Zouna engine. This proprietary technology dates back to the 1990s, originally developed by employees at Kalisto before being further refined by Asobo for their own projects.
The studio's growth was marked by high-profile partnerships, notably with THQ to adapt Pixar films like Ratatouille, WALL-E, and Up. To keep pace with this expansion, the studio implemented a strategy of recruiting about 20% new employees annually, which eventually necessitated the creation of two separate production lines. This period also saw them diversifying into various platforms, including a 2014 partnership with Ubisoft for Monopoly titles and a 2016 collaboration with Microsoft to develop games for HoloLens.
They have since balanced high-fidelity simulations, such as the 2020 Microsoft Flight Simulator, with narrative-driven adventures like A Plague Tale: Innocence (2019) and its sequel, Requiem (2022). In 2021, the studio's market value was estimated at approximately €65 million following a stake purchase by Sagard NewGen.
The studio's name itself reflects its philosophy, derived from the Japanese word 'asobō,' which translates to 'let's play.' This commitment to the craft has resulted in back-to-back Pégase awards for Best French video game in 2020 and 2021.
