In short: Before it was a cornerstone of the Nintendo empire, this studio was a specialized research department. From its origins in virtual reality to its recent evolution into a full subsidiary, the journey of Nintendo Pictures reveals a strategic move to master visual storytelling.

The studio's lineage begins with Visual Science Laboratory, Inc., a company focused on computer graphics and virtual reality research founded by Kenji Yoshida in 1991. What started as a specialized CG and motion capture department eventually evolved into Dynamo Pictures, Inc. in October 2004. However, it took several more years for the studio to become a truly independent entity, officially established as an animation studio by department head Hiroshi Hirokawa on March 18, 2011. The entity originally functioned as the motion capture and CG production division within the laboratory. This specific department operated under the leadership of Hiroshi Hirokawa before its formal independence.

The studio's trajectory shifted significantly in late 2021. Dynamo Amusement, Inc. emerged as an independent entity on October 1, 2021, following the spinoff of the 'Amusement' branch—specialising in VR and theatre-based theme park rides—before eventually joining the Japanese arcade operator GENDA as an affiliate. This separation allowed the core studio to focus more intensely on its primary animation and video game content. This particular branch was dedicated to creating VR attractions and theatre experiences. It eventually transitioned into a subsidiary of the Japanese amusement arcade firm GENDA.

Nintendo's interest in the studio became official on July 14, 2022, when the gaming giant announced its intention to acquire the company to bolster its visual content production and planning. The acquisition was finalized on October 3, 2022, at which point the studio was renamed Nintendo Pictures. Since becoming a full subsidiary, the studio has moved toward complete internal production, evidenced by the October 2025 release of its first fully in-house short, Close to You. The corporation aims to improve its planning and production for all visual media. This strategic acquisition was officially announced by the gaming giant in mid-2022.
