How a cleaning equipment supplier became a titan of video game franchises
In short: Before it was a household name in gaming, Tecmo was a specialist in building maintenance. From selling cleaning supplies in 1967 to developing iconic series like Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive, the company's evolution from industrial services to digital entertainment is a remarkable corporate transformation.
The foundations of Tecmo were laid through two distinct entities. In September 1964, the Imperial Trustee Corporation began specializing in building maintenance and the supply of cleaning equipment. Additionally, the Nippon Yacht Corporation was founded on 31 July 1967 for managing maritime property. These two companies eventually merged to form the basis of the Tecmo we recognize today.
The company's pivot toward entertainment began in 1969 when it started selling amusement equipment. By 1970, it opened its first self-managed amusement facility in Chiba Prefecture. After renaming itself Tehkan Ltd in 1977, the company released its first internally developed arcade game, Pleiads, in April 1981. This marked the beginning of its transition into the video game industry, eventually rebranding as Tecmo Ltd on January 8, 1986.
Tecmo's influence expanded significantly through the 1980s and 1990s, finding success on the Nintendo Entertainment System with titles like Tecmo Bowl and Ninja Gaiden. The company later joined the PlayStation era, developing series such as Dead or Alive and Monster Rancher. However, the company faced internal turbulence in the late 2000s, including lawsuits from former executives and employees regarding unpaid bonuses and wages.
The corporate structure of Tecmo underwent radical shifts. In 2009, following a declined takeover bid from Square Enix, Tecmo merged with Koei to form Tecmo Koei Holdings. While the Tecmo brand persisted as a label for several years, the original legal entity was dissolved in Japan on April 1, 2010. Today, its famous intellectual properties are managed by Koei Tecmo Games.
