From child artist to a decade of cinematic dominance
In short: Ayesha Jhulka didn't just enter the Indian film industry; she conquered it in a whirlwind of releases. After starting as a child artist, she became a household name in the early 1990s, securing multiple nominations and starring in some of the era's highest-grossing hits.
A child performer in the 1983 movie Kaise Kaise Log, Jhulka entered the acting world after being born in Srinagar during 1972 to parents who were a costume designer and a former Air Force officer. Her professional path eventually diversified across multiple languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, and Telugu cinema. She made her official acting debut in the Telugu film Neti Siddhartha in 1990 before transitioning to Hindi cinema with the 1991 box office success Kurbaan. The early 1990s served as her definitive breakthrough period. In 1992, she achieved significant visibility with roles in Khiladi and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, earning Filmfare Award nominations for Best Female Debut for both performances. Her mother, Sneh Jhulka, actually worked as a costume designer on the films Dalaal and Vishwavidhata. Jhulka's father served as a Wing Commander in the Air Force. She also appeared in the Bengali production Katha Dilam during her debut year.
This momentum carried into 1993, a prolific year where she appeared in ten different films. During this stretch, she earned critical praise for her versatility, portraying a village belle in Sangram and appearing in the high-grossing Dalaal. While her career spanned over three decades and more than 60 films, Jhulka eventually took a hiatus. She returned to the screen in the 2000s with projects like Umrao Jaan and Genius, eventually making her debut on web platforms with Hush Hush in 2022. Beyond her screen presence, she married construction tycoon Sameer Vashi in 2003, marking a transition into a private life that balances her extensive cinematic legacy.
