From Begusarai to the screen: The nomadic upbringing of actress Sriti Jha
In short: Sriti Jha is a household name in Hindi television, but her path to stardom was defined by a childhood of constant movement. Born in Bihar, she lived in three different major cities before launching a career that would eventually make her one of the industry's most versatile and recognized performers.
Born on 26 February 1986 in Begusarai, Bihar, Sriti Jha’s early life was marked by frequent relocation. Her family spent a decade in Kolkata before moving to Kathmandu, Nepal. Eventually, they settled in New Delhi, where Jha attended Laxman Public School and later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Sri Venkateswara College. This diverse upbringing preceded her entry into the entertainment industry, where she debuted in 2007 with the teen drama Dhoom Machaao Dhoom.
Jha’s career trajectory shifted from teen roles to complex, emotionally demanding characters. She gained significant attention for her portrayal of a split-personality patient in Jyoti and a visually impaired woman in Rakt Sambandh. Her breakthrough arrived with the series Dil Se Di Dua... Saubhagyavati Bhava?, where she played a domestic violence survivor. This role established her reputation for bringing vulnerability and strength to her performances, a trait that critics frequently highlighted as her signature.
Her most defining role, however, was as Pragya Arora Mehra in the long-running series Kumkum Bhagya, which aired from 2014 to 2021. This performance earned her critical acclaim and multiple awards, including the ITA Award for Best Actress in a Drama. Beyond television, Jha has expanded into film, podcasting, and poetry. She is also known for her advocacy, participating in fundraisers and using her platform to recite poems that challenge social stereotypes regarding sexuality and personal freedom in India.
