From a childhood nickname to the bright lights of Broadway
In short: Born in Los Angeles, Elizabeth Greer Feldstein is known to the world as Beanie. While her career spans everything from indie darlings to historical dramas, her journey from a sociology student to a Golden Globe nominee involves a fascinating blend of comedic timing and theatrical grit.
The name 'Beanie' was actually a childhood moniker given to her by her nanny. Growing up in Los Angeles as the youngest of three, her family life was steeped in the entertainment industry; her father, Richard Feldstein, worked as a tour accountant for Guns N' Rex, while her brother is the well-known actor Jonah Hill. After graduating from Wesleyan University in 2015 with a sociology degree, she continued to build a versatile filmography.
Feldstein first achieved significant recognition through several notable comedy roles. She appeared in the 2016 film Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and starred in the critically acclaimed 2017 film Lady Bird, alongside Saoirse Ronan. Her performance in the 2019 film Booksmart was particularly impactful, earning her a Golden Globe nomination for her leading role in a comedy or musical. Her television work is equally varied, ranging from guest appearances in Orange Is the New Black to portraying Monica Lewinsky in the 2021 FX series Impeachment: American Crime Story.
Her transition to the Broadway stage brought both triumph and intense scrutiny. She made her debut in the 2017 revival of Hello, Dolly!, playing Minnie Fay. However, her 2022 turn as Fanny Brice in the revival of Funny Girl proved more controversial. While she earned a Drama League Award nomination, critics were divided; some found her performance merely good, while others felt she lacked the vocal power required for the role. She eventually departed the production in September 2022, where she was succeeded by Lea Michele.
