Farrah Forke: From New York Bartender to Hollywood Star and Voice of Big Barda
In short: Before she became a familiar face on Wings and the voice of Big Barda, Farrah Forke honed her signature toughness as a New York City bartender. Her journey from a Texas cheerleader to a working actress reveals a career defined by resilience, both on screen and in her personal life.
Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1968, Farrah Rachael Forke was named after family friend Farrah Fawcett. After graduating from the Hockaday School in Dallas, she moved to New York City in 1989 to study at the Lee Strasberg Institute. To support herself, she worked as a bartender, an experience she later credited with helping her land her breakout role as Alex Lambert on the NBC sitcom Wings. Forke noted that the toughness required to manage a bar at closing time allowed her to project the authority needed for the character, a role she played as a recurring guest in the 1992–93 season and a series regular the following year.
Forke’s career spanned a diverse range of projects, from theatrical films like Michael Mann’s Heat (1995) and Barry Levinson’s Disclosure (1994) to voice acting for animated series such as Batman Beyond and Justice League Unlimited. Despite her success, she faced significant health challenges early in her career. In 1989, she received silicone breast implants, which later ruptured and caused complications. She had them removed in February 1993 and subsequently filed a lawsuit against several manufacturers, including Dow Corning and the Dow Chemical Company, in March 1994.
By the early 2000s, Forke shifted her focus away from Hollywood. After executive producing and starring in the 2001 film It Is What It Is—which she considered her best work—she moved to New Mexico and eventually back to Texas to raise her twin sons with Mark Layton Brown. Although she returned briefly for a voice role in 2005, she largely retired from acting to embrace life in Texas. Forke passed away at her home in The Woodlands on February 25, 2022, at the age of 54, following a battle with cancer.
