In short: Based on the memoirs of David and Nic Sheff, the 2018 film Beautiful Boy explores the harrowing, non-linear reality of a family fractured by substance abuse. Director Felix van Groeningen captures the exhaustion and helplessness of a parent watching his child disappear into the depths of crystal meth and heroin.

The film, which marked Felix van Groeningen's English-language debut, is rooted in the dual perspectives of David Sheff and his son, Nic. By adapting both David's 2008 book, Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction, and Nic's Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines, the production attempts to bridge the gap between a father's desperate attempts to intervene and a son's internal struggle with relapse. The narrative follows Nic as he cycles through rehab, college, and the streets, while David grapples with the painful realization that he cannot force his son to recover if the young man is not ready to help himself.

Production was a grueling process for the cast, particularly for Timothée Chalamet, who played Nic. To authentically portray the physical toll of addiction, Chalamet lost twenty pounds before filming intense hospital scenes. He noted that while his mind understood he was acting, his body reacted to the physical stress of the shoot, which included enduring cold conditions under a rain machine. The director, Van Groeningen, prioritized emotional realism, even importing Belgian production habits like two weeks of pre-filming rehearsals to cultivate chemistry between the actors.

Despite the critical acclaim for the performances of Chalamet and Steve Carell, the film’s reception was mixed. While reviewers praised the acting, some criticized the nonlinear structure and pacing, arguing that these stylistic choices occasionally muted the story's emotional impact. The film underwent significant post-production changes, with editor Nico Leunen brought in to completely reconstruct the movie over a seven-month period. Ultimately, the story concludes on a note of hard-won hope, revealing that the real-life Nic Sheff achieved eight years of sobriety, a milestone the film attributes to the enduring support of his family and friends.
