Can a second chance at a single day change the trajectory of true love?
In short: In the 2004 romantic fantasy If Only, a businessman experiences a tragic loss, only to wake up and relive the same day. Armed with a haunting premonition, he attempts to rewrite fate, shifting his priorities to cherish his partner before time runs out in this poignant exploration of devotion.
Directed by Gil Junger, the film follows Ian Wyndham, a British professional living in London with his American musician partner, Samantha Andrews. Their relationship is strained by Ian's tendency to prioritize his career over Samantha's emotional needs. This tension culminates in a fatal taxi accident that claims Samantha's life, leaving Ian devastated and clutching a notebook containing her original music.
The narrative takes a supernatural turn when Ian awakens the next morning to find Samantha alive and well. Recognizing the day's events mirror his previous experience, he becomes convinced he has been granted a second chance to prevent her death. While he successfully alters minor details—such as his watch functioning correctly and a business meeting yielding positive results—the looming threat of the taxi ride remains a constant, ominous fixture.
Determined to make the most of their time, Ian takes Samantha to his hometown and encourages her to share her musical talents publicly. He shifts his focus entirely toward her, culminating in a final, heartfelt declaration of love. When the inevitable accident occurs, the outcome is inverted: Samantha survives, but Ian becomes the victim. The film concludes six months later, showing Samantha moving forward while honoring the memory of the man who finally learned how to love her.
The production, which filmed in London locations like the London Eye and CityPoint between November 2002 and January 2003, premiered at the Sarasota Film Festival in January 2004. Despite not securing a US theatrical release, it gained international exposure and eventually aired on American television in 2006. Jennifer Love Hewitt, who starred alongside Paul Nicholls, also contributed to the soundtrack, co-writing and performing songs that underscore the film's emotional core.
