In short: In 1962, a paranoid scientist locks his family in a bunker after a plane crash, fearing nuclear war. When his son Adam finally surfaces in 1997, he encounters a world he does not recognize. This fish-out-of-water tale explores the clash between Cold War innocence and modern urban decay.

Directed by Hugh Wilson and released in 1999, Blast from the Past centers on Adam Webber, who spent his entire life underground in a fallout shelter built by his father, Calvin. Calvin, an eccentric scientist, was convinced that the Cuban Missile Crisis would lead to an imminent nuclear apocalypse. When an F-86 Sabre crashed into their home in 1962, the family retreated to the bunker, triggering a 35-year time lock. The public assumed the family perished, and their neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley eventually devolved into a blighted, crime-ridden area.

When the shelter doors finally opened in 1997, Adam ventured out to find supplies. He was aided by Eve Rustikov, a woman he met while attempting to sell his father's vintage baseball cards. The film uses this premise to juxtapose Adam's polite, 1960s-era sensibilities against the cynicism of late-90s Los Angeles. While Adam’s father initially feared the surface was a wasteland of irradiated mutants, Adam instead discovered a world of complex social dynamics, eventually finding love and helping his family transition to the modern era.

Critical reception was mixed, with some reviewers praising the film's original premise and satirical undercurrents, while others found the execution scattered or reliant on tired clichés. Roger Ebert noted that the film attempted to be about something more than just its comedic setup, whereas other critics felt it lacked a driving narrative force. Despite its unique concept, the film was a commercial disappointment, grossing $40.3 million worldwide against a $35 million budget, which failed to cover marketing and exhibition costs.
