The tough-guy actor who saved Frank Sinatra from drowning
In short: Brad Dexter was the quintessential rugged character of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Known for his burly frame and villainous roles, he possessed a secret life of high-society friendships and a literal life-saving moment that earned him a Red Cross medal and a seat in Sinatra's inner circle.
Brad Dexter was born Boris Michel Soso in 1917 to Serbian immigrants in Nevada. His physical presence—tall, burly, and handsome—made him a natural fit for the 'tough-guy' and western archetypes of the 1950s. After studying at the Pasadena Playhouse and serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, he transitioned from an amateur boxer to a prolific character actor. He famously played villains in RKO productions like 'The Las Vegas Story' (1951) and 'Macao' (1952) before becoming a staple of 20th Century Fox films.
While his screen persona was often menacing, Dexter was known for an easygoing real-life personality. This duality extended to his personal life, where he maintained a friendship with Marilyn Monroe and a brief marriage to singer Peggy Lee in 1953. His most dramatic real-world contribution occurred on May 10, 1964, on the island of Kauai. While filming 'None but the Brave', Dexter and two surfers rescued Frank Sinatra from nearly drowning in the ocean. This act of bravery was so significant that Sinatra awarded him a Red Cross medal and appointed him vice president of Sinatra Enterprises.
Despite his success in 'The Magnificent Seven' (1960), Dexter eventually grew frustrated with the lack of creative control inherent in acting. He shifted his focus toward producing, working with director Sidney J. Furie on projects like 'Lady Sings the Blues' (1972). He remained a respected figure in the industry until his death in 2002, leaving behind a legacy as a versatile performer who balanced the grit of the western genre with a life of genuine heroism.
