Why Martin Scorsese's haunting paramedic drama became a misunderstood box office failure
In short: Martin Scorsese’s 1999 psychological drama Bringing Out the Dead was a commercial disappointment, grossing only $16.7 million against a $32 million budget. Despite its critical acclaim, the film was arguably mis-marketed as an action-heavy car chase movie, obscuring its true, deeply compassionate exploration of burnout, trauma, and redemption.
Directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Paul Schrader, the film is an adaptation of Joe Connelly’s 1998 novel. It follows Frank Pierce, a depressed New York City paramedic struggling with insomnia and occupational burnout after failing to save a homeless teenager named Rose. Over 48 hours, Frank navigates the harrowing reality of emergency medicine, hallucinating the ghosts of his lost patients while paired with a series of partners who each embody different, often extreme, approaches to their work.
The film’s production was deeply personal for Scorsese, who drew on his own experiences witnessing the constant cycle of hospital visits and emergency calls throughout his life. He viewed the paramedics as modern-day saints, comparing their efforts to the work of the Salvation Army and Dorothy Day’s Catholic Worker Movement. Despite this, the film struggled to find its audience upon release. Editor Thelma Schoonmaker later suggested that the film was mis-marketed as a high-octane car chase movie, which alienated viewers who were unprepared for its meditative, spiritual focus on compassion and the burden of saving lives.
While initial audience reception was lukewarm—CinemaScore surveys gave it a C-—the film has gained significant appreciation over time. In 2022, star Nicolas Cage identified it as one of the best movies he ever made. Critics like Roger Ebert praised its urgent, deep emotional impact, and Schoonmaker remains convinced that the film’s challenging, unexpected nature is precisely what makes it a beautiful, albeit overlooked, entry in Scorsese’s filmography.
