Why did a star-studded supernatural action film become one of Hollywood's biggest box-office bombs?
In short: In 2013, Universal Pictures released a supernatural comedy featuring Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds as afterlife lawmen. Despite the high-profile cast and a massive budget, the film failed to connect with audiences or critics, ultimately becoming a notorious financial disappointment that struggled to find its footing at the cinema.
The film follows Nick Walker, a Boston detective murdered by his corrupt partner, who is recruited into the Rest in Peace Department. This agency captures souls that avoid judgment, known as Deados. Nick is paired with Roy Pulsipher, a veteran Old West lawman. To the living, their appearances are magically altered; Nick appears as an elderly man or a young girl, while Roy appears as a beautiful woman.
The production history was long and complex. Development began in 2006 with director David Dobkin, but he eventually departed. Robert Schwentke took over directing duties, and the film was greenlit in 2010. Filming concluded in early 2012, with a release date pushed from June to July 2013. The final product was met with harsh criticism, holding a 13% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Financially, the project was a disaster. While the studio reported a budget around $130 million, reports suggest the actual cost reached $154 million after accounting for tax incentives. The film earned only $78.3 million globally, falling far short of its production costs. Despite this, the franchise saw a later expansion with a 2022 home-media prequel.
The film's failure is often attributed to its formulaic script and perceived lack of wit. Critics like Roger Moore compared it unfavorably to other comic book adaptations, while audiences gave it a mediocre C+ grade. Despite the negative reception, the film remains a case study in how significant star power and high budgets cannot guarantee success when the creative execution misses the mark.
