A widow's fight for a home becomes an ode to aging
In short: In the drama Calle Málaga, Carmen Maura portrays a woman resisting the sale of her family home in Tangier. More than a property dispute, the film explores the dignity of self-determination and the refusal to yield to the passage of time.
Directed by Maryam Touzani in her Spanish-language debut, Calle Málaga is a multi-national co-production involving companies from Morocco, France, Spain, Germany, and Belgium. The film centers on Maria Angeles, a widow who faces a domestic conflict when her daughter attempts to sell the family house. This narrative tension serves as a backdrop for what critics describe as a "luminous" exploration of growing old without surrendering to it.
Substantial institutional funding bolstered the project, notably via a €551,289 Spanish Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts grant during September 2024, plus another €500,000 provided by Eurimages in November 2024. Principal photography concluded in Tangier, Morocco, in January 2025. The film's international reach is evidenced by its distribution across numerous territories, including North America, Australia, Scandinavia, and several European nations.
After debuting globally at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in August 2025, the motion picture earned a prestigious Audience Award and garnered widespread praise from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 98% positive rating from 41 critics, with reviewers praising Maura's "resplendent" performance and the film's modest scale. While it served as Morocco's submission for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards, it did not make the final short list.
The project represents a significant cross-cultural collaboration, featuring participation from RTVE and Movistar Plus+. It has been showcased at major festivals including Toronto and Palm Springs. Despite its small scale, the film is noted for its "outsize charm" and its focus on the right to self-determination in the face of familial pressure.
