How a tennis match inspired a cinematic exploration of love, power, and obsession
In short: Challengers follows a decade-long love triangle between three tennis players, culminating in a high-stakes match. Directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Justin Kuritzkes, the film uses the sport as a metaphor for personal dynamics, exploring how intimacy, ambition, and professional rivalry collide both on and off the court.
The film’s origin lies in writer Justin Kuritzkes’s reaction to the 2018 U.S. Open final, where Serena Williams was penalized for receiving coaching. Struck by the cinematic tension of a player unable to communicate with a vital figure, he began crafting a story about characters who needed to discuss matters far more significant than tennis. His research included reading Andre Agassi’s memoir, Open, which provided the inspiration for the protagonist Art Donaldson’s arc, specifically the idea of a veteran player entering a lower-level Challenger tournament to regain his form.
The narrative spans thirteen years, tracking the evolving relationship between Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach, and two players, Patrick Zweig and Art Donaldson. The screenplay, which landed on The Black List in 2021, was brought to director Luca Guadagnino by producers Amy Pascal and Rachel O'Connor. Guadagnino, known for his distinct visual style, pushed for a literal interpretation of the love triangle, insisting that all corners of the relationship must touch. This led to a pivotal scene where the two male leads share a kiss, emphasizing the complex, shifting allegiances between the characters.
Production required intense physical preparation. Actors Zendaya, Josh O'Connor, and Mike Faist trained for months with former pro Brad Gilbert. Faist, in particular, underwent a rigorous transformation, gaining 30 pounds by consuming up to 10,000 calories daily to achieve an 'aerodynamic' athlete's physique. The film, which features a pulsing score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, was delayed from its initial 2023 release due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Upon its 2024 debut, it grossed $96 million worldwide and earned critical acclaim, including a Golden Globe win for its original score.
