The stuntman who stepped in when a lead actor died
In short: Before he was the architect of the John Wick universe, Chad Stahelski was a stuntman forced to finish a tragic production. After the accidental death of Brandon Lee on the set of The Crow, Stahelski stepped into the lead role to complete the film.
Stahelski's career is defined by a transition from physical performance to cinematic architecture. Born in 1968, he trained in martial arts from a young age, studying Jeet Kune Do under Dan Inosanto. This foundation led him to compete in kickboxing and mixed martial arts, where he became one of the first Americans to compete in Shooto. His early professional career was rooted in high-stakes stunt work, most notably serving as the primary stunt double for Keanu Reeves in The Matrix franchise. He is an alumnus of the University of Southern California. During his time as an instructor at the Inosanto school in Los Angeles, he honed his skills. He also fought Manabu Yamada in a 1993 Shooto event.
One of the most significant moments in his career occurred on March 31, 1993, during the filming of The Crow. After actor Brandon Lee was fatally wounded by defective blank ammunition, Stahelski and fellow stuntman Jeff Cadiente took over the remaining filming.
To maintain the production, special effects were used to superimpose Lee's face onto Stahelski's body. This experience, along with his work with martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo-ping, deeply informed his directorial style. Stahelski eventually co-founded 87Eleven, which later split into the action design firm 87Eleven and the production company 87North Productions. He made his directorial debut in 2014 with John Wick, which grossed over $88 million. Since then, he has directed the subsequent three sequels, establishing a signature style for the franchise. In 2024, Lionsgate appointed him to oversee the John Wick and Highlander franchises across all multimedia platforms, including film and television. He served as the second-unit director for the Birds of Prey reshoots. He is currently designing action for the anime series Lazarus. He also has projects in development for Netflix and Warner Bros.
