How a chaotic production and a lead actress swap birthed a romantic classic
In short: Before becoming a 2003 box office hit, the romantic drama Chalte Chalte faced a turbulent journey. From a high-profile casting shuffle involving Aishwarya Rai and Kajol to a complete visual makeover for Rani Mukerji, the film’s path to the screen was as dramatic as the story of Raj and Priya.
Directed by Aziz Mirza, Chalte Chalte was the final production from Dreamz Unlimited, the company founded by Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla. The film centers on the volatile relationship between Raj, a carefree trucking company owner, and Priya, a structured fashion designer. Their romance, which begins with a car accident and spans from Mumbai to Greece, serves as a study of marital friction, though critics like Vivek Fernandes argued the screenplay eventually devolved into predictable, sentimental territory.
The film's production was famously fraught. Rani Mukerji was the initial choice for the role of Priya, but she initially declined due to commitments with the film Saathiya. Aishwarya Rai was subsequently signed, but filming was reportedly disrupted by her then-boyfriend, Salman Khan, leading to her departure. After Kajol also declined the role due to pregnancy, Mukerji returned to the project. To mark the character's transition, makeup artist Mickey Contractor gave Mukerji a signature tanned look and smoky-eye aesthetic, a style that became a trend in later films like Hum Tum and Veer-Zaara.
Commercially, the film was a success, grossing ₹43.28 crore worldwide against a budget of ₹11 crore. It was declared a hit by Box Office India and ranked as the fourth-highest-grossing Hindi film of 2003. The soundtrack, composed by Jatin-Lalit and Aadesh Shrivastava, was also a major contributor to its popularity, becoming the year's sixth highest-selling album with approximately 1.8 million units sold. Despite mixed critical reception regarding its plot, the film remains a notable example of the era's romantic cinema, blending traditional storytelling with the star power of Khan and Mukerji.
