The undrafted underdog who climbed to a $40 million contract
In short: Charvarius Ward didn't just make the NFL; he defied the scouting system. After being overlooked for the draft, he spent years grinding through the ranks of the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs before becoming a cornerstone for the San Francisco 49ers.
Ward's journey is a masterclass in professional persistence. After a productive high school and community college career, he was notably excluded from the NFL Combine—a major hurdle for any prospect seeking visibility. His stock only began to rise during a 'stellar' performance at Middle Tennessee State's pro day in March 2018. Despite this, he remained an undrafted free agent, signing with the Dallas Cowboys on a modest three-year, $1.71 million contract that included a mere $5,000 signing bonus.
His path to the top was marked by strategic moves and high-pressure roles. He was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018, where he initially served as a depth piece, even spending three weeks as a 'healthy scratch' to learn the playbook. However, he quickly ascended, eventually becoming the team's No. 1 starting cornerback. During his tenure with the Chiefs, Ward became a reliable playmaker, notably recording a career-high ten combined tackles in a 2021 overtime victory and securing his first Super Bowl ring in 2020.
His progress reached its peak during March 2022. Ward joined the San Francisco 49ers on a $40.50 million deal spanning three years. This massive leap in valuation reflected his evolution into a premier starter. In his first full 17-game season with the 49ers in 2022, he delivered a career-best performance, recording 87 combined tackles, 11 pass deflections, and a 40-yard fumble recovery, solidifying his status as a top-tier defensive asset.
