In short: T.J. Ward’s path to professional football was nearly derailed by an early injury that led scouts to overlook him. Instead of being recruited, he had to walk on as a college athlete. This underdog journey eventually culminated in a championship ring and a career defined by resilience.

Ward's trajectory began at De La Salle, a high school powerhouse known for its 151-game winning streak. However, an injury during his senior year significantly impacted his recruitment, causing many scouts to lose interest in his potential. This setback forced him to take the difficult path of walking on with the Oregon Ducks rather than securing a traditional scholarship.

His time at Oregon was a test of patience; due to the depth of talent on the team, he did not break into the starting lineup until his senior year. He eventually became one of the Ducks' top defenders from 2005-2009, recording 190 tackles and two interceptions. His performance earned him a second-round selection by the Cleveland Browns in the 2010 NFL draft.

Ward’s professional career was marked by both high-profile moments and physical tolls. In 2010, he faced national scrutiny after a hit on wide receiver Jordan Shipley resulted in a concussion and a $15,000 fine. Despite such challenges, he remained a consistent presence for the Browns before signing a four-year, $23 million contract with the Denver Broncos in 2014.

The pinnacle of his career arrived during the 2015 season. Playing for a Broncos team that boasted the league's #1 defense, Ward contributed to their run to Super Bowl 50. He returned from an AFC Championship ankle injury to record seven tackles and an interception in the championship game against the Carolina Panthers.
