How a track star became the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history
In short: Before he was a cornerstone of the Cleveland Browns, Denzel Ward was a standout sprinter. His explosive speed, evidenced by a 10.49-second 100-meter dash, eventually translated into a record-breaking professional career defined by massive contracts and elite defensive dominance.
Denzel Ward's ascent to NFL stardom began with a foundation of pure athleticism. During his time at Nordonia High School, Ward was not only a football standout but a premier track athlete, recording a personal best of 10.49 seconds in the 100 meters and a 21.38-second 200 meters. This speed became his calling card during the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine, where he tied for the fastest 40-yard dash at 4.32 seconds and posted the best broad jump of any player present at 11 feet, 4 inches.
His transition to the professional ranks was rapid. After playing for the Ohio State Buckeyes under coach Urban Meyer, Ward was selected fourth overall by the Cleveland Browns in the 2018 NFL draft. He immediately made an impact, recording two interceptions in his professional debut against the Pittsburgh Steelers and earning a spot on the NFL All-Rookie Team. His early career was marked by high-stakes performance, including a 99-yard interception return touchdown against the Cincinnati Bengals in 2021.
The financial scale of Ward's career is unprecedented. In April 2022, he signed a five-year, $100.50 million extension, making him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history at that time. He later reclaimed this distinction in July 2026, signing a two-year, $62.2 million extension that made him the highest-paid defensive back in the league's history for a second time. Beyond the field, Ward has expanded his influence into the Cleveland community, joining the ownership group of the Cleveland Guardians in September 2026.
