How a critically reviled film became a massive box office success in 1988
In short: Despite winning a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Picture and facing overwhelming critical disdain, the 1988 drama Cocktail became a global financial juggernaut. While critics dismissed the film as shallow and inert, audiences flocked to theaters, turning the story of a charismatic bartender into the eighth highest-grossing movie of that year.
Based on Heywood Gould's 1984 semi-autobiographical novel, Cocktail underwent significant creative shifts before reaching the screen. Gould, who spent over a decade working as a bartender, originally envisioned a darker, more cynical story about the cult of celebrity. However, studio executives pushed for a younger, more idealistic protagonist to ensure commercial appeal. This tension between Gould’s gritty source material and the studio's desire for a polished, upbeat Hollywood product defined the production process.
The film's transformation was further accelerated by the casting of Tom Cruise, whose involvement helped secure financing. Co-star Bryan Brown noted that the script was significantly altered to protect the star's image, resulting in a lighter narrative. Kelly Lynch, who played Kerry, later claimed that Disney reshot roughly one-third of the film, excising character backstories to focus on the flashy bottle-throwing tricks that became the movie's signature visual element. Even the musical score was replaced at the last minute.
Critics were largely unforgiving. Reviewers like Vincent Canby and Roger Ebert labeled the film empty and brainless, with both placing it on their lists of the worst films of 1988. The Golden Raspberry Awards echoed this sentiment, awarding it Worst Picture and Worst Screenplay. Yet, the film grossed $171.5 million worldwide, fueled in part by the massive success of The Beach Boys' chart-topping single, Kokomo.
Perhaps the most unique legacy of the film involves its star. In 1988, Tom Cruise also appeared in Rain Man, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. This made Cruise the only actor to star in both a Razzie-winning Worst Picture and an Oscar-winning Best Picture in the same year. While Gould initially felt devastated by the critical reception, he later reflected that the experience ultimately toughened his resolve as a writer.
