The true story behind the viral horror-comedy that turned a tragedy into revenge
In short: In 1985, a black bear ingested a duffel bag of cocaine dropped by a smuggler and died. Decades later, the creature became a viral sensation, inspiring a 2023 Hollywood film that reimagines the animal as a rampaging, drug-fueled force of nature. It is a bizarre blend of fact and fiction.
The 2023 film Cocaine Bear, directed by Elizabeth Banks, is loosely inspired by a genuine 1985 incident involving a 175-pound American black bear. In reality, the bear died after consuming a bag of cocaine discarded by Andrew C. Thornton II, a convicted drug smuggler who perished when his parachute failed. Unlike the film’s blood-soaked narrative, there is no evidence the real bear killed anyone; its final hours remain a mystery. The animal was discovered three months later in northern Georgia, surrounded by 40 opened plastic containers of the drug.
While the real bear is now a taxidermied attraction at the Kentucky for Kentucky Fun Mall, the film transforms its demise into a dark, violent revenge fantasy. To bring the titular predator to life, actor Allan Henry provided the physical performance, using custom aluminum limb extensions to mimic bear movements. Wētā FX then used this performance as a reference to craft the digital creature, opting for a performance-based approach rather than traditional facial tracking markers.
The film’s production, which took place in County Wicklow, Ireland, cost between $30 million and $35 million. Upon its February 2023 release, it grossed $90 million worldwide. Critics offered mixed reviews, with some praising its B-movie energy and others criticizing its thin plot. Despite the mixed reception, the film’s viral premise sparked a wave of similar low-budget creature features like Meth Gator and Crackcoon, cementing the bear’s status as an unlikely pop-culture icon.
