In short: Born in 1981, Computer Gaming World survived the industry's great crash to become a massive, 500-page titan. It was a cultural touchstone for gamers, eventually struggling against the rise of the internet. Discover how this unlikely publication shaped the way we played for over two decades.

Founded by Russell Sipe in 1981, Computer Gaming World began as a modest bimonthly newsletter in Anaheim, California. Sipe, a former minister, launched the project after realizing the market lacked a dedicated resource for computer games. Despite having no prior publishing experience, he secured investors and established the magazine just as the industry faced the devastating video game crash of 1983. While 17 other color magazines failed during that period, CGW persisted, eventually becoming the sole survivor of that era.

The magazine underwent a dramatic transformation throughout the 1990s. Under the editorial leadership of Johnny L. Wilson, it expanded its scope and physical size significantly. By 1997, issues had ballooned to 500 pages, a weight so substantial that readers joked about its heft. Ziff Davis acquired the publication in 1993, and it continued to receive critical acclaim, with The New York Times labeling it the industry's definitive guide for purists. Its success was built on deep, technical reviews that helped players maximize their software.

The digital age eventually forced a reckoning. As advertising revenue migrated to online platforms, print circulation began to falter. By 2006, despite a healthy circulation of roughly 300,000, Ziff Davis rebranded the magazine as Games for Windows: The Official Magazine. This transition marked the end of the CGW brand, which published 268 editions in total. Today, the legacy of the publication is preserved through digital archives, ensuring that its extensive coverage of early gaming history remains accessible to future generations of enthusiasts.
