In short: Born into poverty, Denis Law was once dismissed as a "puny" and "weak" prospect. Yet, he defied every critic to become a global icon, becoming the only Scottish player to ever win the Ballon d'Or and setting multiple British transfer records in a single career.

Law's journey began in a council tenement in Aberdeen, where he was so poor he went barefoot until age 12. Despite a serious squint and a slight build that led Huddersfield Town scout Archie Beattie to call him a "freak," Law was mentored by Bill Shankly. Shankly recognized his potential, personally paying for Law to be "fed up" at a local cafe to build his physical strength. This early investment allowed Law to debut at just sixteen years old in 1956.

His career was defined by record-breaking moves. He set a British transfer record for Manchester City in 1960 (£55,000), then another for Torino in 1961 (£110,000), and a third for Manchester United in 1962 (£115,000). His time in Italy was marked by cultural shock and the "joyless" catenaccio system, but it also exposed him to advanced sports science. He eventually returned to England, where he became a cornerstone of the "United Trinity," scoring 237 goals in 404 appearances for Manchester United.

Law's legacy is cemented by historic milestones: he won the Ballon d'Or in 1964 and holds the record for the most competitive goals in a single Manchester United season (46). However, his career was also shaped by hardship, including a car crash in 1962 and a chronic knee injury that forced him to play through significant pain, often receiving cortisone injections. Even in his final years, his integrity remained; in 1974, he famously refused to celebrate a goal against his former club, Manchester United, fearing it might cause them to be relegated.

He remains a towering figure in Scottish football, jointly holding the international record for goals with Kenny Dalglish (30 goals in 55 appearances). From a boy in handed-down shoes to a "King" of the pitch, Law's career serves as a masterclass in perseverance and the evolution of the modern footballer.
