In short: After 33 years and 368 issues, Game Informer was abruptly shuttered by its corporate owner in August 2024. The website was wiped, and the staff was laid off. Yet, in a rare turn for media, the publication was resurrected by a game developer just months later, bringing the original team back.

Founded in 1991 by FuncoLand owner David R. Pomijie, Game Informer began as an in-house newsletter designed to optimize advertising spending. Following GameStop's acquisition of both the retailer and the magazine in 2000, the publication became a powerhouse of gaming journalism. By 2011, it had ascended to become the third-largest magazine in the United States, boasting over 8 million copies in circulation. Its success was anchored by deep industry relationships, its integration into GameStop's loyalty programs, and a relative lack of direct competition in the print space.

The magazine's trajectory shifted as the retail landscape evolved. Following years of financial pressure on its parent company, the publication faced significant staff layoffs in 2019 and 2020. Despite these challenges, it maintained a distinct editorial identity, known for features like the 'Game Infarcer' April Fools' parody and the controversial 'Sacred Cow Barbecues,' which sought to critique revered gaming icons. However, in August 2024, GameStop leadership abruptly terminated the publication, erasing its digital archive and replacing the website with a static farewell page.

The story took an unexpected turn in March 2025, when Gunzilla Games, the developer behind 'Off the Grid,' acquired the brand. This acquisition facilitated the restoration of the digital archive, the return of the laid-off staff, and the resumption of print publication in June 2025. This revival highlights the enduring value of institutional memory in gaming media, as the magazine transitioned from a corporate retail asset to an independent business entity, ensuring that its decades of coverage—spanning from the 16-bit era to the modern console generation—remained accessible to the public.
