In short: In 2015, Creed breathed new life into the Rocky series by shifting the focus to Adonis, the son of Apollo Creed. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film balanced nostalgia with a fresh perspective, earning widespread acclaim and proving that even a long-running saga can find compelling new directions.

The project began in 2013 when MGM hired Ryan Coogler to develop a spin-off of the Rocky franchise. Although Sylvester Stallone had previously considered the 2006 film Rocky Balboa the end of the series, he agreed to reprise his iconic role as a mentor to Adonis Creed, played by Michael B. Jordan. Notably, this was the first film in the franchise that Stallone did not write, as he felt a generational gap existed between his original work and the new vision.

The production process was deeply rooted in the series' history. The film's release on November 25, 2015, was timed to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the opening scene of the original 1976 Rocky. Filming took place across Philadelphia, Liverpool, and Gainesville, Georgia. The climactic fight at Goodison Park in Liverpool mirrored the intensity of the original bouts, while the score by Ludwig Göransson paid homage to Bill Conti’s classic themes.

Beyond the ring, the story explored themes of legacy and mortality. Adonis, the illegitimate son of Apollo Creed, seeks out Rocky to train him, only to discover that his mentor is battling non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The film’s emotional weight was bolstered by performances from Tessa Thompson and Phylicia Rashad. Critics praised the film for its authenticity, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 95% approval rating. It grossed $174.1 million worldwide, securing its place as a successful evolution of the Rocky saga.
