In short: When Kate falls asleep at Charing Cross station, she wakes to a locked, subterranean nightmare. Stalked by a deformed hermit who treats the tunnels as his personal hunting ground, she must navigate a labyrinth of sewers and abandoned tracks to escape a killer who views humans as prey.

Released in 2004, the slasher film Creep, written and directed by Christopher Smith, centers on the harrowing experience of a woman trapped overnight in the London Underground. After missing her train, Kate encounters a series of desperate individuals, including a coworker and a homeless couple, all of whom fall victim to a hideously deformed, mentally ill hermit named Craig. Craig, the titular creep, maintains a gruesome lair in the sewer system where he keeps captives in rat-infested cages before consuming them.

The production process was marked by intense, sometimes controversial methods. Smith intentionally withheld the sight of actor Sean Harris in full makeup from lead actor Franka Potente until the filming of a specific surgery scene, aiming to elicit genuine reactions of confusion and fear. While some critics later labeled these tactics as less-than-ethical, Smith maintained that he provided safety measures, such as allowing Potente to call his name if she needed to halt a take. Despite the grueling nature of the shoot, Potente expressed great enthusiasm for her first-time acting experience.

Critical reception of the film has been mixed. Some reviewers, such as those at Time Out, criticized the movie for relying on genre clichés and squandering its premise, while others, like All Movie, praised its atmosphere and the performance of its antagonist. Comparisons have frequently been drawn to the 1972 film Death Line, which also features a cannibalistic killer in the London Underground, though Smith cited An American Werewolf in London as his primary inspiration. The legacy of the film continues, with a reboot announced in May 2025, set to begin production in the autumn of that year.
