How a low-budget horror film turned a Florida hurricane into a deadly trap
In short: When a Category 5 hurricane strikes Florida, a swimmer ignores evacuation orders to find her father, only to become trapped in their flooded home with a pack of man-eating alligators. This 2019 creature feature defied expectations, turning a simple, claustrophobic premise into a tense, critically acclaimed summer box office success.
Directed by Alexandre Aja and produced by Sam Raimi, Crawl was designed as a lean, 87-minute thriller. Aja, who previously directed Piranha 3D, sought to create a 'home invasion' movie where the hurricane itself acted as the primary antagonist. To achieve this, the production team constructed elaborate sets inside warehouses at the Port of Belgrade, Serbia, marking the first time a Paramount film was shot in the country. The crew built seven water tanks, including a massive 60-meter by 80-meter tank for neighborhood scenes, and utilized 5 million liters of water daily to simulate the flooding.
The film's realism was a central focus for Aja, who researched real-world hurricane footage and alligator behavior. Lead actress Kaya Scodelario underwent rigorous swimming training for six weeks to prepare for the physically demanding role, which required her to perform in bare feet and endure long, grueling shoot days. To maintain suspense, the production used a mix of practical effects—including fake alligator heads on sticks and stuntmen in green suits—and visual effects handled by Rodeo FX, which created 244 shots for the final cut.
Despite a modest production budget of $13.5–15 million, the film grossed over $91 million worldwide. Critics praised its brisk pacing and self-aware execution, with some reviewers noting how the film tapped into contemporary climate anxiety by framing the hurricane as an impending ecological collapse. While the film was a commercial success, it notably bypassed conventional press screenings before its July 2019 release. Following its positive reception, a sequel was officially greenlit in August 2024, with a release scheduled for July 2027.
