In short: Dabangg redefined Bollywood marketing by promoting its protagonist, Chulbul Pandey, rather than its star, Salman Khan. This strategy transformed a routine action comedy into a cultural phenomenon, spawning sequels, remakes, an animated series, and even NFT collections, while cementing the character as a modern icon of Indian cinema.

Released on 10 September 2010, Dabangg became the highest-grossing Hindi film of its year, earning ₹219 crore worldwide. Directed by Abhinav Singh Kashyap, the film follows Chulbul Pandey, a corrupt yet charismatic police officer in Uttar Pradesh. The production was a massive undertaking, involving over 100 sketches for set designs and pioneering the use of the Khalid Bin Al Waheed station in Dubai for filming.

The film's commercial strategy was unique for its time. Producers focused on building the character of Chulbul Pandey as a standalone brand, drawing comparisons to legendary figures like Gabbar Singh from Sholay. This approach, which mirrored marketing tactics used for films like 3 Idiots, proved highly effective. The film's success was so significant that the stock prices of co-producer Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision rose by approximately 40% in early September 2010.

Despite its commercial triumph, the film faced controversy. The song 'Munni Badnaam Hui' sparked a trademark dispute with the makers of Zandu Balm, which was eventually settled out of court. Furthermore, the film drew criticism for its portrayal of women and the misogynistic nature of its lead character. In 2021, the Mumbai Police even used quotes from the film to publicly denounce the sexism it depicted.

Dabangg's legacy persists through its sequels, Dabangg 2 (2012) and Dabangg 3 (2019), as well as international remakes in Tamil and Telugu. The franchise has expanded into new media, including an animated series on Cartoon Network and a 2022 NFT collection. Even years later, the character remains a touchstone in Indian pop culture, with plans for a fourth installment aiming for a more realistic tone.
