How a 2011 action film launched India's most successful cinematic police universe
In short: Singham, a 2011 action drama, transformed from a simple remake into the cornerstone of a massive media franchise. By blending 1970s-style heroism with modern high-voltage stunts, the film became a box-office superhit, eventually spawning a shared cinematic universe that continues to expand through sequels and interconnected character appearances today.
Directed by Rohit Shetty and starring Ajay Devgn as the honest police officer Bajirao Singham, the film is a Hindi-language remake of the 2010 Tamil movie Singam. Its narrative follows Singham’s battle against a corrupt crime boss and politician in Goa, culminating in a dramatic confrontation that restores justice. The film’s success was driven by its intense action sequences and emotional drama, which resonated with audiences across India, earning a worldwide total of approximately ₹1.41 billion against a budget of ₹410 million.
Beyond its initial box-office performance, Singham gained cult status and established the foundation for what is now known as the Cop Universe or Singham Universe. This franchise includes sequels like Singham Returns (2014) and Singham Again (2024), alongside related films such as Simmba (2018) and Sooryavanshi (2021). These entries frequently feature crossover appearances, with Devgn reprising his role to anchor the shared world. The franchise has also expanded into other media, including an animated series that premiered on Discovery Kids in 2018.
The production process was notable for its scale and challenges. Filming involved complex logistics, such as using 100 police jeeps for a single scene in Vagator, Goa, and coordinating with hundreds of junior artists in Mumbai. Despite its popularity, the film faced controversy, including protests in Karnataka over perceived derogatory dialogue, which led to temporary cancellations in some cinemas. Nevertheless, the film’s impact on Indian cinema remains significant, influencing subsequent action films and even earning a tribute in the 2020 Black Eyed Peas music video for the song Action.
