In short: Darling Lili was meant to be a grand 1970 spectacle starring Julie Andrews, but it collapsed under studio interference and ballooning costs. From forced location changes to a disastrous release, the film became a cautionary tale of creative friction that eventually led its director to lampoon the experience on screen.

Directed by Blake Edwards, Darling Lili was a romantic-musical spy film set during World War I. It followed the story of Lili Smith, a musical star who secretly worked as a German spy, and her complicated courtship with an American pilot, Major Larrabee. Despite the star power of Julie Andrews and Rock Hudson, the production was plagued by immense logistical and financial hurdles from the start.

The film's budget spiraled from an initial $6 million to a staggering $25 million, largely due to studio demands and inefficient filming schedules. Edwards was forced to shoot expensive aerial sequences in Ireland using planes from a previous production, costing $70,000 per day. Further complications arose when May 1968 protests in France necessitated moving production to Belgium, where daily costs remained high at $50,000. Ultimately, the film earned only $3.2 million in distributor rentals, cementing its status as a major financial failure.

Beyond the budget, Edwards faced constant interference from Paramount executives, who edited the final theatrical release without his input. The director later satirized these studio struggles in his 1981 film S.O.B. It was not until 1991 that Edwards was invited to recut the film to match his original vision. This director's cut, which was 29 minutes shorter than the original, premiered at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival, offering a rare second chance for a project that had been critically panned upon its 1970 debut.
