In short: Known as "Sniffer" for his uncanny ability to sense scoring opportunities, Allan Clarke was a force of nature in English football. From record-breaking transfers to a dramatic World Cup debut, his career was defined by clinical instincts and a relentless drive that saw him conquer the pitch and later lead teams from the dugout.

Born in Staffordshire in 1946, Clarke's rise through the Football League was meteoric. After proving his worth at Walsall, he moved to Fulham in 1966 for £35,000. By 1968, Leicester City had paid a then-British record fee of £150,000 to secure his services. His impact was immediate; in just one season, he scored the winning goal in the 1969 FA Cup semi-final against his boyhood club, West Bromwich Albion, and earned man-of-the-match honours in the final.

His most iconic period came at Leeds United, following a £165,000 transfer in June 1969—a move that again set a new British transfer record. At Leeds, he earned the nickname "Sniffer" for his predatory instincts. He was a vital component of a side that won the Fairs Cup in 1971 and the League title in 1974, a season in which the team went 29 opening matches without defeat.

Clarke's international career was equally notable. He holds the distinction of being the most recent England player to make his debut during a World Cup, scoring a penalty against Czechoslovakia in the 1970 tournament. Over five years, he earned 19 caps and scored 10 goals. Though his playing days were eventually curtailed by knee injuries, his influence extended into management, leading clubs like Barnsley and Leeds United through the highs of promotion and the lows of relegation.
