How a Berlin Newspaper Survived the Cold War to Become a Global Voice
In short: Born in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, Der Tagesspiegel has navigated decades of geopolitical tension and shifting media landscapes. From its roots in a divided city to its recognition as a world-class publication, this German daily remains a central pillar of liberal, centrist political discourse today.
Established on September 27, 1945, the newspaper was the vision of three founders: Erik Reger, Walther Karsch, and Edwin Redslob. Its headquarters are situated in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district, positioned just 600 meters from the historic site of the Berlin Wall. This proximity to the city's former fracture point mirrors the paper's own history, which was profoundly shaped by the 1948 blockade that restricted its reach across East Berlin and Brandenburg for years.
For over four decades, the publication operated under the stewardship of an independent trust. However, the 1990s brought a wave of industry consolidation. In 1993, the paper was acquired by the Georg von Holtzbrinck Publishing Group to secure the capital necessary for technical upgrades, including a modern printing facility. By 2009, ownership shifted again when Dieter von Holtzbrinck purchased the title, along with Handelsblatt, from the larger group.
The paper has evolved significantly, embracing modern design aesthetics that earned it the World's Best-Designed Newspapers Award in 2005. Beyond its domestic influence, it has maintained an international perspective, with correspondent offices in Washington, D.C., and Potsdam. Its reporting has occasionally bridged transatlantic divides, most notably through the work of Christoph von Marschall, whose 2007-2008 coverage of Barack Obama’s campaign became a cultural phenomenon in Germany.
Today, the paper continues to balance traditional journalism with cultural engagement, such as co-presenting the annual Soundcheck Award for the best album of the year. While it remains a staple of the western half of Berlin, its reach and reputation have expanded, cementing its status as a significant voice within the German media landscape.
