In short: Founded in 1978, Diario Frontera serves the state of Mérida as a vital source of regional, national, and international news. Yet, its commitment to reporting on local events once triggered a violent backlash, transforming the publication from a standard community paper into the focal point of intense, city-wide civil unrest.

Established on 12 August 1978 by José Benedicto Monsalve and its inaugural director, the writer Rafael Ángel Gallegos, Diario Frontera began its life as a modest operation. Initially printed in black and white using a rotary press borrowed from Diario Critica, the publication evolved throughout the 1980s into a generalist newspaper. By 1989, it solidified its role in the local community by dedicating a recurring section to the University of the Andes, reflecting the institution's profound influence on the daily life of Ejido and the surrounding region.

The newspaper's editorial independence faced a severe test in June 2005. Following the death of a university student at the hands of police, the paper published an inquiry that presented a complex narrative. While the report confirmed the student had been struck by officers, it also disclosed his affiliation with an armed political group. This nuanced reporting sparked immediate outrage, leading to an attack on the newspaper’s headquarters by student groups. These events served as the catalyst for widespread riots that quickly engulfed the entire city.

Despite the gravity of the situation and the subsequent pleas for safety and press freedom issued by Reporters Without Borders, the newspaper found little relief from the surrounding hostility. The institution persisted, however, and by 2008, it marked its thirtieth anniversary with a comprehensive graphic overhaul, including a new logo and updated typeface. Today, the paper continues to distribute its standard colored format, maintaining its long-standing identity as the daily voice of the country's occident, while managing two Sunday supplements: the magazine Aquí entre Nos and the children’s publication, Chipilín.
