How an Austrian newspaper pioneered the digital age for German-language journalism
In short: Founded in 1988 as a financial daily, Der Standard evolved into a national newspaper of record for Austria. Beyond its print legacy, the publication claims to have launched the first German-language web portal in 1995, a digital pivot that eventually saw its online platform outperforming the print edition in profitability.
Established by Oscar Bronner, Der Standard published its inaugural edition on 19 October 1988. While it began with a focus on finance, it grew into a socially and culturally liberal voice, often cited by international media when seeking an Austrian perspective. The paper maintains a commitment to the Austrian press honour code, ensuring a clear distinction between news reporting and commentary. Its ownership structure has shifted over the decades, moving from early stakes held by Axel Springer and Süddeutscher Verlag to the current consolidation under the Bronner family and Bronner Online AG.
The paper’s influence is particularly strong among highly educated readers; in 2007, it held a 19.4% readership share among those with university or college degrees. Despite its national ambitions, the publication historically faced criticism for a Vienna-centric focus, a tendency it has addressed by establishing editorial offices in Styria, Upper Austria, and Carinthia. It remains a key player in European media, participating in initiatives like Atomium Culture and maintaining a long-standing partnership with The New York Times to provide international content to its readers.
The most significant transformation for the brand occurred online. Its web portal, derStandard.at, launched in February 1995, marking a milestone for German-language media. By 2011, the digital platform had become a massive success, reaching over 1.1 million unique users in the fourth quarter alone. This digital shift proved essential for the company's financial health, as the online portal generated higher profits than the physical newspaper that same year. In 2019, the site underwent its first major design overhaul in nearly two decades to modernize its technology and user experience.
