How a 1999 teen comedy about a Kiss concert became a box office bomb
In short: In 1999, director Adam Rifkin released a nostalgic teen comedy following four boys desperate to see Kiss in 1978 Detroit. Despite featuring the band members themselves, the film struggled to find its audience, ultimately becoming a financial disappointment that left critics largely unimpressed by its over-the-top style.
The film follows four teenage members of a Kiss cover band named Mystery: Hawk, Lex, Trip, and Jam. Set in October 1978, the plot centers on their frantic, chaotic journey to reach a Kiss concert in Detroit after Jam’s mother destroys their tickets. The narrative is a series of misadventures, ranging from drugging a priest with hallucinogenic mushrooms to navigating a male stripping contest and a confrontation with a local gang.
Despite the involvement of Kiss members Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss, the film failed to capture significant commercial success. Produced on an estimated budget of $17 million, it grossed only about $5.8 million worldwide. Critics were similarly unenthusiastic; the film holds a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 33/100 score on Metacritic. Reviewers, including Janet Maslin of The New York Times, criticized the directing style and noted that the band members appear on screen for only a few minutes.
Beyond its theatrical run, the film found a niche life through home media. It was released on VHS and DVD in December 1999, featuring special content like guitar lessons and band commentary. It later saw a limited re-release in 2007 as part of the Kissology Volume Three box set and arrived on Blu-ray in 2015. While it remains a cult piece of 1970s nostalgia, its legacy is defined more by its status as a box office bomb than by critical acclaim.
