In short: Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny was a commercial failure upon its 2006 release, grossing only $8.2 million. Despite the poor reception, the musical comedy about a mythical guitar pick has since achieved cult status, with its creators remaining proud of the project nearly two decades later.

The film follows the fictionalized origins of the comedy rock duo Tenacious D, played by Jack Black and Kyle Gass. The plot centers on their quest to steal a supernatural guitar pick from the Rock & Roll History Museum, which they believe will grant them legendary status. The story culminates in a high-stakes rock-off against Satan, portrayed by Dave Grohl, who provides vocals for the showdown.

Development of the film was a long process that began with the band's desire to make a movie as early as 1994. After scrapping an initial script about a road trip to Miami, the duo signed with New Line Cinema in 2003. Production faced delays, including a year-long pause while Black filmed King Kong, but principal photography eventually wrapped in the summer of 2005. To maintain creative control, Black accepted a significant pay cut, reducing his standard $12 million fee to $1 million, which was shared with Gass.

Upon its wide release on November 22, 2006, the film struggled to find an audience, debuting at number eleven with only $3 million. Critics were largely unimpressed, with some describing it as a garish mess or criticizing its reliance on drug-related humor. However, the film found a lasting audience over time. By 2019, Black noted that while they were initially devastated by the poor box office performance, he remains proud of the work and its eventual transition into a cult classic.

The legacy of the film persists through various media and cultural markers. The soundtrack, which features contributions from Ronnie James Dio and Meat Loaf, was released alongside the film. In 2012, the band's album Rize of the Fenix addressed the film's failure directly in its lyrics. More recently, in 2024, Shout! Studios released a Blu-ray edition, and in 2026, a guitar from the film was featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Musical Bodies exhibition.
