In short: Detective Pikachu broke the mold for video game adaptations by ditching the franchise's usual protagonist, Ash Ketchum. Instead, it delivered a noir-inspired urban fantasy where Ryan Reynolds provided the voice and motion capture for a cynical, amnesiac Pikachu, creating a unique cinematic experience that grossed over 433 million dollars worldwide.

Released in 2019, Detective Pikachu marked the first live-action entry in the long-running Pokémon franchise. Directed by Rob Letterman, the film shifted the focus away from the familiar animated series tropes to explore Ryme City, a unique setting where humans and Pokémon coexist without the traditional use of Poké Balls or competitive battles. The story follows Tim Goodman, played by Justice Smith, as he teams up with a deerstalker-clad Pikachu to investigate the mysterious disappearance of his father, Harry.

The production process was a complex technical undertaking. To achieve a photo-realistic look, the team utilized high-end visual effects similar to those used in The Lion King and Fantastic Beasts. Cinematographer John Mathieson opted to shoot on traditional film rather than digital, aiming for a more grounded, realistic aesthetic. On set, actors interacted with puppets to ensure natural performances, with Ryan Reynolds later dubbing over all dialogue to bring the title character to life. The film’s marketing was equally inventive, including a viral prank where a fake bootleg video featuring Pikachu dancing to synthwave music garnered millions of views.

The project originated from a desire to move beyond the established Ash Ketchum narrative. While the concept of talking Pokémon was considered during the 1990s, it was initially rejected by developers at Game Freak. The idea was only revived for the 2016 video game that inspired this film. Despite the challenges of adapting a beloved property, the movie was a commercial success, earning 433 million dollars against a 150 million dollar budget. It remains a notable example of how a studio can successfully pivot a massive franchise into a new, mature genre while maintaining the core appeal of its source material.
