The 1919 silent film that dared to challenge Germany's criminalization of gay love.
In short: Released in the Weimar Republic, Different from the Others was a groundbreaking cinematic polemic against Paragraph 175, the law that criminalized homosexuality. Featuring a sympathetic portrayal of a violinist driven to suicide by blackmail, the film sparked intense cultural backlash, leading to its eventual suppression by state censors.
Directed by Richard Oswald and co-written by the pioneering sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld, Different from the Others premiered in May 1919. It was the first film to openly depict homosexuality, aiming to dismantle the legal and social stigma surrounding it. The story follows Paul Körner, a successful musician whose life is destroyed after he is blackmailed for his orientation. Hirschfeld, who also helped finance the project through his Institute for Sexual Science, used the film to advocate for his theory of sexual intermediacy, arguing that homosexuality was a natural variation rather than a crime or an illness.
The film’s release triggered a fierce moral panic. Conservative, Catholic, and antisemitic groups protested screenings, often framing the work as a dangerous influence on youth. In response, the German government reinstated national film censorship in May 1920. By August 1920, the film was banned from public view, restricted only to medical and scientific professionals. The censorship commission, led by psychiatrists who were vocal opponents of Hirschfeld, claimed the film was biased and could potentially recruit minors into homosexuality.
The original version of the film was largely lost after the Nazis seized power in 1933 and destroyed many works they deemed decadent. Current versions have been reconstructed using footage salvaged from Hirschfeld’s 1927 documentary, Laws of Love, a copy of which was discovered in the 1970s. Despite its turbulent history, the film remains a landmark in cinema, influencing later works like the 1961 British film Victim and serving as a testament to early efforts to secure justice through public knowledge and enlightenment.
