Beyond the Hiss of Steam: The Gritty Aesthetic of Dieselpunk
In short: While steampunk captures the romanticism of the Victorian era, dieselpunk dives into the grease, soot, and heavy machinery of the 20th century. It is a world where the optimism of the Jazz Age meets the industrial brutality of the World Wars, trading chivalry for the relentless roar of the internal combustion engine.
Coined in 2001 by game designer Lewis Pollak, dieselpunk is a retrofuturistic subgenre that blends the technology of the interwar period (1918–1939) through the 1950s with postmodern sensibilities. Unlike its cousin steampunk, which focuses on industrial steam power, dieselpunk centers on diesel-based locomotion and the aesthetic of the 'diesel era.' It is defined by 'decodence'—a portmanteau of Art Deco and decadence—marrying rectilinear lines with aerodynamic shapes and a 'noir ambience.'
The genre is often divided into two primary schools based on the start of World War II. 'Ottensian' dieselpunk focuses on a utopian, positive vision of technology where the decadent aesthetics of the Roaring Twenties evolved unhindered by economic collapse. In contrast, 'Piecraftian' dieselpunk explores a more pessimistic, dystopian reality. In this school, human culture is depicted as having ceased to evolve due to constant, widespread warfare, prioritizing survival and diesel power over aesthetic progress—a theme often compared to the world of Mad Max.
Dieselpunk's influence is vast, spanning literature, cinema, and gaming. It draws from movements like Constructivism, Bauhaus, and Futurism, and musical styles like Big Band and Swing. While often associated with 'Weird World War II' and alternative histories, it also appears in mainstream media. For instance, the Indiana Jones franchise and Hayao Miyazaki's anime films like Porco Rosso are frequently cited for their dieselpunk qualities. Even the 1982 film Blade Runner, though typically labeled cyberpunk, is recognized as dieselpunk due to its heavy borrowings from film noir.
