The underground hip-hop trio that bridged the gap to mainstream charts
In short: Dilated Peoples spent years cultivating a raw, underground sound before finding success on major labels and global charts. From unreleased bootlegs to high-profile video game soundtracks, their journey illustrates how niche artistry can eventually permeate the wider cultural landscape of both music and gaming.
In 1992, DJ Babu (of Beat Junkies), Evidence, and Rakaa formed Dilated Peoples in Los Angeles. They spent years refining their craft within the underground hip-hop community before gaining significant traction. Fans traded bootlegged tapes of a 1995 project called Imagery, Battle Hymns & Political Poetry, despite its lack of an official release.
A four-album recording deal commenced after the collective joined Capitol Records. This era saw them release The Platform in 2000 and Expansion Team in 2001. While maintaining their gritty roots, these records achieved significant success: Expansion Team peaked at 36 on the Billboard 200 and reached 8 on the US Billboard R&B Albums list. Their third album, Neighborhood Watch (2004), sold approximately 143,000 copies in the United States.
A defining characteristic of their career has been their heavy presence in video game culture. They have appeared on soundtracks for Need for Speed: Underground, NBA Street Vol. 2, MLB 06: The Show, SSX 3, and Fight Night Round 3. In 2012, they even collaborated with PlatinumGames to provide the track "This is Madness" for the credits of Anarchy Reigns.
The group's influence also stems from deep-seated collaborations. They were key figures in launching the careers of West Coast emcees like Defari and Amad Jamal. Furthermore, their long-time producer relationship with The Alchemist resulted in dozens of collaborative tracks across their discography, cementing their role as pillars of the West Coast hip-hop collective known as the Likwit Crew.
