In short: Released in 2011, the psychological thriller Dream House featured a powerhouse cast including Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz. Despite the pedigree, the film became a commercial and critical disaster. Behind the scenes, creative clashes and a marketing blunder turned the production into a textbook example of a studio-mangled project.

The film follows Will Atenton, a man who moves his family into a new home, only to discover it was the site of a brutal murder years earlier. As he investigates, he realizes he is actually the survivor of that attack, suffering from a delusion that his deceased family is still alive. The plot takes a turn when it is revealed that a neighbor, Jack, hired a hitman to kill his own wife, but the assassin mistakenly targeted Will's family instead.

The production was plagued by internal conflict. Director Jim Sheridan reportedly clashed with producer James G. Robinson over the script and final cut. The tension was so severe that Sheridan allegedly attempted to remove his name from the project. The lead actors, including Craig and Weisz, were also reportedly unhappy with the final version. Compounding these issues, the film’s marketing team released a trailer that spoiled the movie's central plot twist, effectively undermining the mystery before audiences even reached the theater.

Critics were largely unforgiving. The film was not screened for reviewers in advance, a common sign of studio apprehension. Upon release, it garnered a dismal 7% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics describing it as slow and predictable. While the score by John Debney received some praise as a cohesive work, the film itself was widely panned as a confounding mess. Despite this reputation, the story remains a point of interest, with reports in 2021 suggesting that Morgan Creek Entertainment is considering a remake.
