From lumberjack to Lyndon B. Johnson: the resilience of Donald Moffat
In short: Before he became a staple of American prestige television and film, Donald Moffat worked as a lumberjack and bartender in Oregon. This transition from manual labor to the Broadway stage highlights a rare commitment to the craft of acting, fueled by a conviction that the vocation was inescapable.
Born in Plymouth, Devon, in 1930, Donald Moffat's path to stardom was non-linear. Following a tenure with the British Army between 1949 and 1951 and his education at King Edward VI School, he attended London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. His early career began at the Old Vic Theatre Company before he moved to the United States, where he faced a period of professional uncertainty.
During his time in Oregon, Moffat worked as a bartender and a lumberjack. He noted that after only six months of manual labor, he realized his identity as an actor was permanent. To support his career while working in Princeton, New Jersey, he took on grueling jobs as a carpenter, while his wife performed ironing to supplement his meager $25-per-week pay. This era of his life underscores the grit required to sustain a career in the arts before the era of modern celebrity.
Moffat eventually achieved significant acclaim on Broadway and in film. For Painting Churches, he gained an Obie Award, while his performances in Right You Are If You Think You Are and The Wild Duck secured Tony Award nominations. His filmography includes notable turns as Lyndon B. Johnson in The Right Stuff (1983) and the U.S. president in Clear and Present Danger. He remained active until his final role as a judge in Law & Order: Trial by Jury in 2005, leaving behind a legacy of versatile performances across stage, screen, and television.
