In a world of floating islands, two unlikely heroes hunt a legendary monster
In short: The 2008 animated film Dragon Hunters presents a fractured universe of floating islands plagued by ravenous beasts. Lian-Chu and Gwizdo, a mismatched pair of inept hunters, are recruited by a young girl to defeat the World Gobbler, a terrifying dragon that emerges every twenty seasons to wreak absolute destruction.
Directed by Arthur Qwak and Guillaume Ivernel, the film expands upon the creative universe established in the Dragon Hunters television series. The narrative centers on the contrast between the protagonists: Lian-Chu, a physically imposing brute with a gentle nature, and Gwizdo, a high-strung schemer driven by greed. Their shared aspiration is humble—to retire to a farm and raise sheep—yet they find themselves thrust into a perilous quest to confront a creature that has historically defeated all challengers.
The production was a collaborative international effort, with development and storyboarding taking place in Paris, France. To optimize tax credits, the final phases of animation, lighting, and color were completed in Berlin, Germany, and Luxembourg City, Luxembourg. This logistical strategy allowed the production team to manage a budget of €12,000,000 effectively. The film features a score by Klaus Badelt, which incorporates the track Lotus by Jalan Jalan, and utilizes distinct voice casts for its French and English releases, including actors such as Forest Whitaker and Vincent Lindon.
Upon its 2008 release, the film achieved a worldwide gross of $12,235,843. While its performance varied by market—notably reaching the third spot in the Brazilian box office during its second weekend—it maintained a modest critical reception, holding a 67% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on nine surveyed reviews. Beyond its theatrical run, the film found a secondary life on home media, with approximately 1 million DVDs sold in the United States, cementing its status as a unique entry in international animated fantasy.
