How a shrimp argument birthed a Nickelodeon classic about two mismatched stepbrothers
In short: Before they were iconic stepbrothers, Drake Bell and Josh Peck were co-stars on The Amanda Show. A simple, improvised sketch featuring the two actors arguing over a piece of shrimp sparked the idea for their own sitcom, eventually leading to a four-season run that defined a generation of Nickelodeon television.
Created by Dan Schneider, Drake & Josh premiered on January 11, 2004, centering on the chaotic domestic life of two polar-opposite teenagers. Drake Parker, played by Bell, was the charismatic, popular musician, while Josh Nichols, played by Peck, was the intellectual and clumsy foil. Despite their differences, the show focused on their evolving bond, set against the backdrop of their San Diego home and the Premiere movie theater where Josh worked.
The show’s production was famously interrupted in late 2005 when Bell was involved in a severe car accident while driving his 1966 Mustang. The collision, caused by another driver falling asleep at the wheel, resulted in extensive facial injuries for Bell and forced a four-month production hiatus. Filming eventually resumed in March 2006, and the series concluded in September 2007 after 56 episodes. The show’s legacy extended beyond its broadcast run, spawning two television films, video games, and a series of books.
Behind the scenes, the show maintained a long-running mystery: the profession of the boys' mother, Audrey. Although Schneider filmed a scene for the series finale that finally revealed she worked in catering, he chose to cut it during editing. He believed that keeping the audience guessing was a more enduring way to honor the fan community's long-standing curiosity. This commitment to the show's lore persisted even years later, with cast members reuniting for online shorts and discussing potential revivals.
Despite various attempts to reboot the franchise, including a proposed adult-oriented project that was ultimately shelved due to creative differences, the original series remains a high-water mark for the network. At its peak in 2006, it consistently ranked among the top ten most-watched cable shows of the week, proving that the chemistry between its two leads was a rare and resonant lightning-in-a-bottle moment for television.
