How a talking snake and a 12-year-old boy defined a surreal Nickelodeon era
In short: Sanjay and Craig was a bizarre animated sitcom that followed a boy and his secret-keeping snake through the town of Lundgren. Created by Jim Dirschberger, Jay Howell, and Andreas Trolf, the show blended suburban absurdity with high-stakes stunts and a cast of eccentric neighbors, running for three seasons on Nickelodeon.
Premiering on May 25, 2013, Sanjay and Craig centered on the friendship between 12-year-old Sanjay Patel and his pet snake, Craig. While Craig was a master of disguise capable of posing as a lawyer or a beauty pageant queen, his ability to speak remained a closely guarded secret known only to Sanjay and a select few. The duo spent their time navigating the town of Lundgren, often clashing with their snake-terrified neighbor, Mr. Leslie Noodman, who harbored a deep-seated grudge against them.
The series was defined by its eclectic ensemble and surreal humor. Sanjay idolized Remington Tufflips, a washed-up 1980s action star, while his father, Vijay, invented mechanical oddities like the Partybot. The show’s supporting cast included characters like the overachieving Megan Sparkles and the eyepatch-wearing Hector Flanagan. The narrative frequently explored the mundane turned chaotic, such as Sanjay’s attempts to win over his crush, Belle Pepper, or the group’s obsession with the town’s mysterious holiday, Huggle Day.
Production on the series officially concluded in June 2016, following the airing of 60 episodes across three seasons. The show’s finale, a half-hour special titled "Booyah for Bollywood," aired on July 29, 2016. Despite its relatively short run, the series left a distinct mark on Nickelodeon’s programming, blending the creators' unique comedic sensibilities with a vibrant, character-driven world that prioritized the unpredictable bond between a boy and his reptilian best friend.
The show’s legacy is tied to its specific brand of absurdity, from the Frycade—where Sanjay and Craig hung out—to the complex, often prank-filled relationships between the residents of Lundgren. By the time production ended, the show had established a cult following, with reruns continuing on Nicktoons until March 31, 2022. It remains a notable example of mid-2010s animation that embraced the weirdness of childhood imagination.
