In short: Empress Ki is a 51-episode historical drama that tracks the ascent of Ki Seung-nyang. Born in Goryeo, she is sent to the Yuan court as a tribute woman but rises through the ranks to become the Empress Consort, navigating dangerous political rivalries and complex romantic entanglements along the way.

The series, which aired from October 2013 to April 2014, follows the life of Ki Seung-nyang, portrayed by Ha Ji-won. Initially forced into the Yuan court as a child, she survives the death of her mother and grows up disguised as a man. Her journey is defined by her dual identity as a Goryeo patriot and a powerful figure within the Yuan imperial hierarchy. She eventually marries the last Yuan emperor, Toghon Temür, played by Ji Chang-wook, while maintaining a complicated connection to her first love, the Goryeo King Wang Yoo.

The narrative is structured around the intense power struggles of the Yuan court. The protagonist faces formidable antagonists, including the first Empress Consort Tanashiri, who attempts to eliminate her, and the later Empress Bayan Khutugh. These conflicts are compounded by the machinations of regents like Yeon Chul and his successors, as well as the treacherous influence of court eunuchs like Golta. The show explores how the protagonist manages to influence imperial politics while balancing her personal ambitions against her loyalty to her homeland.

Originally titled Hwatu, the production team changed the name to avoid confusion with traditional playing cards. The series achieved significant success, winning the top serial drama honor at the 9th Seoul International Drama Awards. Ha Ji-won’s performance was also recognized with the Grand Prize at the MBC Drama Awards. The show remains a notable example of historical fiction that blends the personal drama of its lead characters with the broader, often violent, political landscape of the 14th-century Yuan dynasty.
