How a Turkish Drama Conquered Global Television and Became a Cultural Phenomenon
In short: Endless Love, known locally as Kara Sevda, transformed from a Turkish production into a global juggernaut. Broadcast in over 110 countries and translated into 50 languages, it shattered international records, secured prestigious awards, and captivated millions of viewers, proving that local storytelling can resonate across vastly different cultural landscapes.
Produced by Ay Yapım and directed by Hilal Saral, the series aired on Star TV from 2015 to 2017. The narrative follows the star-crossed romance between Kemal Soydere, a mining engineering student from a middle-class background, and Nihan Sezin, the daughter of wealthy socialites. Their lives are upended when Nihan is forced into a marriage with the ruthless Emir Kozcuoǧlu to protect her brother, Ozan, from legal consequences following a staged accident. This betrayal drives Kemal to leave Istanbul for the mines of Zonguldak, only to return five years later as a powerful figure seeking to confront his past.
The series achieved unprecedented international acclaim, becoming the first Turkish production to win the International Emmy Award for Best Telenovela in 2017. Its reach is staggering; it remains a dominant force in Hispanic prime-time television in the United States, consistently drawing over 2 million daily viewers and nearly 4 million for its finale. Beyond traditional broadcast, its digital footprint is equally massive, with its official YouTube channel amassing nearly 3 billion views. This popularity is so profound that wax figures of the lead characters, Kemal and Nihan, are now displayed in the Tashkent City Park museum in Uzbekistan.
Filmed primarily on location in Istanbul, the show utilized specific neighborhoods like Üsküdar, Beşiktaş, and Yeniköy to ground its high-stakes drama in reality. Even the corporate headquarters of the antagonist, Kozcuoǧlu Holding, was brought to life using the Acibadem Universities campus. According to Can Okan, CEO of the show's distributor Inter Medya, the sheer scale of the series' success defies simple explanation. By 2021, the show continued to garner recognition, winning Best International Soap Opera at the Soap Awards France, cementing its status as a milestone in the history of Turkish television.
