When a corporate job turns into a lethal conspiracy, how do you disappear?
In short: In the 2012 action thriller Erased, an ex-CIA operative living in Belgium discovers his entire company has vanished overnight. With his records wiped and his life marked for termination, he must protect his estranged daughter while navigating a web of international arms trafficking and corporate betrayal.
The film, directed by Philipp Stölzl and starring Aaron Eckhart as Ben Logan, follows a security engineer whose quiet life as a single parent is shattered. Logan works for a subsidiary of the Halgate Group, a multinational corporation. When he flags a missing patent, he arrives at work to find his office empty and his employment history erased. His attempt to verify his status leads to a kidnapping, forcing him to reveal his past as a CIA operative to his daughter, Amy, played by Liana Liberato.
The narrative unfolds as a high-stakes chase involving the CIA, Belgian police, and a hired assassin. Logan discovers that his former employer was using his skills to steal documents from a CIA cache to facilitate illegal arms sales to African insurgents. The goal was to secure lithium mining rights once the insurgents seized power. The conspiracy reaches deep, involving Logan's former lover, Anna Brandt, who initially hunts him for the CIA while secretly working for Halgate, before eventually switching sides.
Critical reception of the film was largely negative, with reviewers frequently citing its unoriginality. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 28% approval rating, with critics describing the plot as a derivative collection of spy movie clichés. Despite the negative consensus, some reviewers, such as Dennis Harvey of Variety, praised the film as a propulsive piece of action cinema. The script, written by Arash Amel, was specifically targeted for its reliance on threadbare motifs, though the film remains a notable example of the 'man on the run' subgenre.
The film concludes with a confrontation where Logan trades a briefcase containing the incriminating documents—and a hidden bomb—for his daughter's safety. After the explosion eliminates his enemies, Logan and Amy reunite at the airport. Released in the US on 17 May 2013 under the title Erased, the film was originally titled The Expatriate in other markets.
