Why this star-studded 2013 corporate thriller became one of Hollywood's biggest box office bombs
In short: Featuring heavyweights like Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman, the 2013 thriller Paranoia promised a high-stakes corporate espionage tale. Instead, it delivered a critical and commercial disaster. With a meager 8% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film serves as a cautionary study in how star power cannot salvage a clichéd script.
Directed by Robert Luketic and based on a 2004 novel by Joseph Finder, Paranoia follows Adam Cassidy, a low-level inventor blackmailed into corporate espionage. After misusing company funds, Cassidy is forced by his former boss, Nicholas Wyatt, to infiltrate the firm of Wyatt’s rival, Jock Goddard. The plot centers on the theft of a revolutionary prototype cellphone, the Occura, while navigating a web of surveillance, betrayal, and murder.
Despite a cast that included Liam Hemsworth, Amber Heard, and industry icons Ford and Oldman, the production struggled to find its footing. Principal photography took place in Philadelphia between July and November 2012. However, the resulting film was widely panned. Critics described it as a tension-free, unoriginal techno-thriller, with some reviewers specifically criticizing the lead performance for lacking the necessary depth to ground the high-stakes narrative.
The financial results were equally dismal. Produced on a $35 million budget, the film grossed only $17.1 million worldwide. In the United States, it debuted at number 13, earning just $3.5 million during its opening weekend. Variety magazine ultimately labeled it one of the biggest box office bombs of 2013, highlighting a significant disconnect between the film's ambitious premise and its execution.
Beyond the numbers, the film’s reception was marked by a consensus of indifference. Aggregators like Metacritic gave it a score of 32 out of 100, while CinemaScore audiences provided a mediocre C+ grade. The project serves as a stark example of how even a high-profile cast and a slick, modern premise can fail to resonate when the underlying story is perceived as muddled and lacking in genuine suspense.
